Redefining the Global order
Ever since the outbreak of Covid-19, it has gradually took over the entire globe. With only about 2% mortality rate, the virus has managed to affect the world from every aspect. There has been pandemics which
influenced the world from time to time viz.Ebola, Spanish Flu etc. It is interesting to note that these pandemics had much higher mortality rate than what Covid-19 has. But the impact of Covid-19 seems to be many fold as compared to any other pandemic. These impacts of the current pandemic would definitely redefine the global order to a great extent. I would like to point out few changes which Covid-19 would bring resulting in redefining the global order.
The pandemic has restricted itself to humans only. No other elements of the nature is facing any ill-effects of the pandemic. It would result in restoration of ecological balance. The global CO2 level would face a declination due to lower exploitation of petrochemicals during the pandemic.
In order to flatten the infection and mortality curve, a temporary lockdown has been imposed on the entire world. A number of restrictions has also been imposed in the day to day life of people. I think, even when the
pandemic is over, some of the things are going to prevail in the society for long time which includes – discouraging public gathering, eating healthy foods for boosting immunity, unnecessary travel, avoid public transport as much as possible etc.
A ‘work from home’ trend would follow further and many people belonging to diverse work field would eventually adopt the trend. In this age of Internet, people can run their entire business virtually without having a
physical workplace. Thus, people would definitely push the limit to utilize the potential of internet to work from
home even after the pandemic is over.
The large scale impact of the pandemic has created a sense of alertness and phobia in people. This would definitely discourage international tourism for a long time. Even when the pandemic is over, people would avoid unnecessary travel and tourism.
The pandemic has imposed tremendous pressure on the global health facilities. Even countries with better health facilities are facing hardship in managing the disease. One of the most positive impact of the pandemic on the world would be strengthening of the existing health facilities by every nation in order to combat future
The adverse effects of the pandemic on the global economy would have a long lasting impact on the lives of both poor and elites. Elites would face a huge backlash in their businesses while thousands of poor would die without food and medicine. The worse outcome of the pandemic would be an economic recession which would totally redefine the global order with respect to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment generation. The pandemic would also result in loss of millions of jobs and create a void in the corporate sector. There would be a steep rise in inflation resulting in lower demand even for necessary items.
In a nutshell, the pandemic would have both positive as well as negative impact on the global order. The positive impact would come in the form of a short term ecological harmony. While the negative impact would
result in the paralysis of the global economy which would arrest the global development for next few years.
