Topic: Child Labour- A brief analysis.
INTRODUCTION: Child Labour is a global issue. Most of the countries are the victims of this evil and our nation, India is not an exception. The employment of children in any kind of work that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful is referred to as child labour. Such children are deprived of their childhood and are also prone to health risks. Child labour often interferes with the ability of the children to attend regular school and thus they are deprived of their opportunities to education.
There are many acts and legislations to fight against this evil but the problem of child labour is still persisting. This happens because no one is interested in the story behind a child opting to work instead of pursuing education, or the reason that bounds a parent to make his child work by dropping him out from schools.
CAUSES: There are many causes pertaining to child labour. Some of the root causes of Child Labour are discussed below:
• Poverty: Poverty which gives birth to many other evils tops the chart again in enhancing the problem of child labour. Children opt to work sacrificing their dreams for the sake of their survival and for the survival of their dependant family members. Thus, the child who is already is victim of the most terrible menace poverty jumps into another evil i.e. child labour. The poor economic conditions of the parents bounds them to push their child in the inhumane world of industries where their child’s life becomes more miserable. Thus, poverty boons child labour.
• Inadequate educational system: Again, the other root cause that adds to child labour is the inadequate educational systems. Many of the villages of our country do not possess adequate schooling facilities and even where schools exists the education provided is frequently of poor quality and most of the parents and children themselves finds it to be irrelevant to their local needs and conditions. Most of the educational institutes are exam centric than being child centric and they are not at all concerned about the carrier of the child. The syllabus of the institute includes less of practical skills and is more of theoretical importance. Thus, the parents finds it more convenient to indulge their kids into work so that they can earn some penny instead of wasting their time in schools learning impractical things. Also, most of the families are not able to afford the expenses of education and in case where free education is provided the parents still prefer work over school for their kids as they believe that the kid would lose income opportunity by wasting his time going to school.
• Traditions, perceptions and customs: The old age traditions, popular perceptions and local customs also plays a major role in enhancing the problem of child labour. The tradition of most of the families that child is expected to carry further his father’s business makes the child to learn the particular trade or family business at an early age ignoring his studies. Most of the parents are of the view that not study but work builds the character of a child and enhances his skills. Also, the popular perception that girls are not meant for education and thus making the girl do household chore at other homes as maid, or selling the girl into domestic employment, or selling them for prostitution gives birth to the worst kind of child labour and exploitation.
• Dysfunctional and economically weak families: The broken families and economic deprivation are also the reasons for child labour in bigger cities. The unhealthy family environment, socially disadvantaged, alcoholic or morally bankrupt families, the financially deprived parents fails to meet the basic need of the child. The feel the need to make independent decisions at a very early age and try to look for their own source of income which lends them into hazardous and unhealthy working environment and industries.
• Public ignorance: Along with these causes there is yet another reason that is equally responsible for increasing numbers of child labourers in India and that is ignorance. We can see children in the age of playing games are working at extremely disastrous places. Every time we come across a tea-stall we can see a child cleaning the glasses and plates who is often referred to as ‘chotu’. Every time we arrive at the railway station to catch a train we can find a boy asking if we want our shoes to be polished, a kid who offers us to buy water bottle. Even at our home or in most of our friends house we can see a girl of a tender age cleaning the house, washing the utensils and doing many household chores that we even after attending majority finds difficult to do. But we ignore everything. This crime of child labour is happening in every other corner of our world and what we are doing is just closing our eyes and pretending that nothing is wrong. Our ignorance to this issue is adding more to this evil of child labour.
• Oversimplified explanations of Child labour: Also, the over-simplified explanations for the existence of child labour that the legislators and policy makers believe has made them to enact such laws or make such provisions that are not effective enough to combat the offence of child labour. The mind-set of the policy makers that there is no permanent and direct solution to curb child labour is only an escape route which they take to avoid tacking this situation.
CONCLUSION: Child labour is a disadvantage for our country and for the entire universe. Those small kids trapped in child labour are our future generations. The future of our country depends on them. These children remains uneducated for their entire life and end up choosing a miserable life for themselves and for their future kids as well. The menace of child labour keeps giving birth to many other different kinds of problems such as child trafficking, bonded labour, child pornography and the list goes on. It’s high time to address this issue by creating awareness among the people as most of the people don’t even know that child labour is illegal and if anyone entertains such activities, there are punishments for the same.
It’s high time to raise our voice against child labour, it’s high time to save the assets of our nation, our children.
