Today, the tragedy of Karbala is remembered by millions worldwide of every faith, every year in solemn commemoration. People reflect upon and reject elements of their lives that mirror the uncivilized tendencies of Yazid… And they vow to become more like Hussain (AS) in their principles.
Heartfelt condolences to you all on the arrival of the month of Muharram, the month in which the most bloodcurdling tragedy in history ever occurred, whose scars still pain our hearts, and whose heroic dimensions continue to inspire us to strive for peace and justice in society by standing steadfast against all kinds of oppressions and oppressors
Today, Aza al-Hussain (AS) [Mourning for Imam Hussain (AS)] in one form or another can be seen throughout the world. Muslim migrants to North America, Europe, Australia, Persian Gulf Arab states, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, have taken with them the culture of mourning for the Martyrs of Karbala. They have aroused the conscience of the local people and infused in them the spirit of freedom and dignity based on firm faith in the One and Only God and His commandments. Throughout history revolutionary and reformation movements, influenced by the epic of Ashura, have sprung in the world to rectify the wrongs in human societies. Imam Hussain’s revolution inspired thousands of Revolutions.
Mahatma Gandhi was inspired to fight for India’s Freedom in his own words:
"I learnt from Hussain (AS) how to attain victory while being oppressed.”
In our own times, the greatest catalyst was undoubtedly the movement generated by Imam Khomeini (ra), whose effects are still being felt in the Islamic Awakening that is sweeping across West Asia and North Africa and into America and Europe.
Imam Hussain (AS) is a role model that all human beings can aspire to; his spirit lives on forever in the human conscience. The way he lived and the way he died show us the value he placed on Justice and Dignity. In his own words he sums it up beautifully:
“Death with dignity is better than a life of humiliation”. - Imam Hussain (AS)
Today , more than ever, in an era where human values have declined, and Global Terrorism threatens all nations and societies, the message of Imam Hussan is needed to revive civilization. Yazid was the ultimate Terrorist of his times and Imam Hussain’s (AS) stand was a stand against Terrorism,Oppression and Injustice. It was a message to all the Freedom loving people of the world and is relevant to the modern human society to fight and resist evil and tyranny, specially the tyranny of Zionism and the Wahabi ideology of Taliban and Al-Qaeda.
The Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) is the greatest unifier of all faiths and Religions. The Tragedy of Karbala, the Grief and Sorrow becomes a bond of uniting all of Humanity. As the poet Josh Malihabadi says:
“Insaan ko bedaar to ho lene do, har qaum pukaraygi hamare hain Hussain (AS)”
Let the Conscience of Humanity awaken, Every Nation will Cry out Hussain belongs to us!
