The dowry system in Kashmir refers to the durable goods, cash, and real or movable property that the bride's family gives to the bridegroom, his parents, or his relatives as a condition of the marriage. Dowry stemmed from Kashmirians skewed inheritance laws, and the Hindu Succession Act needed to be amended to stop the routine disinheritance of daughters. Dowry is essentially in the nature of a payment in cash or some kind of gifts given to the bridegroom's family along with the bride and includes cash, jewellery, electrical appliances, furniture, bedding, crockery, utensils, vehicles and other household items that help the newlyweds set up their home. Dowry is referred to as Dahez in Arabic. In the far eastern parts of India, dowry is called Aaunnpot. Wedding gifts for the son of the Imam of Delhi, India, with soldiers and 2000 guests and same to same in Kashmir. The dowry system can put great financial burden on the bride's family. In some cases, the dowry system leads to crime against women, ranging from emotional abuse and injury to even deaths. The payment of dowry has long been prohibited under specific Indian laws including the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 and subsequently by Sections 304B and 498A of the Indian Penal Code. The Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 defines dowry: "Dowry means any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given either directly or indirectly (a) By one party in marriage to the other party in marriage or (b) By the parents of either party to a marriage or by any other person to either party to marriage or to any other persons;at or before or after the marriage as consideration for the marriage of the said parties, but does not include dower or mahr in the case of persons to whom the Muslim Personal law applies.

Poor conditioned road in Fatehpora Ganderbal causes extreme air pollution nowadays. Newborns and the elderly are increasingly suffering from respiratory diseases. The situation is the same for hundreds and thousands of people using the Fatehpora Ganderbal who are suffering greatly because of extreme dust pollution which is causing respiratory diseases and road safety hazards.
When I went to the site to experience the acute problem firsthand, and saw that due to the dense formations of dust particles in the air, people on either side of the highway cannot see each other across the road. All the shops and other buildings situated in Fatehpora are covered with thick layers of grey dust and the passengers waiting for their buses are trying their best to stay away from the unavoidable dust storms caused by the passing vehicles. Even the places and stalls where someone might go to have refreshments or eat, potential customers cannot as all the chairs and tables are covered with sand and dust.
With great dismay, people who regularly travel this route explained how the clothes they wear become covered with dust and sand; even just waiting five minutes for transportation. They find this an embarrassing situation to contend with. According to the local businessmen, due to intense air pollution, the number of consumers coming to stores is reduces daily. Meanwhile, a wide variety of diseases are spreading among the people of this area; especially affecting the elderly and newborns. Local Residents, said: "The unbearable dust formations and air pollutants have made our lives miserable and have become a major issue for us to efficiently perform our duties. "Various officers, along with the locals, are suffering from various diseases. This situation needs to be addressed and resolved as soon as possible or else things will worsen for all of us." "People who are exposed to such adverse and extreme dust are prone to obtaining serious types of respiratory diseases including lung infections and asthma, nose bleeds, and permanent damage to their sense of smell. The risk is even higher for newborns and the elderly." "That there is brick flat soling, on this road as important as this, is just ridiculous and incomprehensible. Necessary steps need to be taken as soon as possible."

The Jammu and Kashmir government announced some unexpected measures to curb misuse of resources and essential commodities. The state government has imposed a restriction on the number of guests at weddings and at small functions related to them with effect from April 1, 2017, said an ANI report. According to the notification, the number of guests at the wedding ceremony of a daughter and a son to 500 and 400 respectively. For smaller functions like engagements, the number of guests has been restricted to 100. The Jammu and Kashmir government has also banned the use of loudspeakers and firecrackers in any government/private social functions. The state government has also banned sending sweets or dry fruits with invitation cards for functions from April 1. A similar bill has been making headlines in the past few days. A bill that puts a restriction on number of guests at weddings has been introduced in the Lok Sabha. The Bill, introduced by tainted politician Pappu Yadav's wife and Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan says that those spending above Rs 5 lakh on a wedding must contribute towards weddings of poor girls. Talking about the Bill, Ranjan said, These days, marriages are more about showing off your wealth and as a result, poor families are under tremendous social pressure to spend more. This is needed to be checked as it is not good for society at large. Great importance should be assigned to the solemnisation of marriage between two individuals. But unfortunately, these days a tendency of celebrating marriages with pomp and show and spending lavishly growing in the country, she added. According to the Bill, if a family spends above Rs 5 lakh on a wedding, it has to contribute 10 per cent of the amount on weddings of girls from poor families. The Bill seeks that if any family intends to spend more than Rs 5 lakh towards expenditure on marriage, such family shall declare the amount proposed to be spent in advance to the appropriate government and contribute 10 per cent of such amount in a welfare fund which shall be established by the appropriate government to assist the poor and Below Poverty Line families for the marriage of their daughters. It says that after this proposed legislation comes into force, all weddings shall be registered within 60 days of the solemnisation. According to the Bill, the government may fix the limit of guests and relatives and number of dishes to be served to the guests and relatives for solemnisation of marriage or for the reception as it may deem necessary or expedient to prevent the wastage of food items.

"Regularisation"
Scores of labourers under the banner of Horticulture department Casual Labourers Association raised slogans in support of their demands and said that their wages are pending from many years.
They said that their wages are being withheld since many years and have not been released till date due to which they have to face immense hardships. Despite order issued from the Secretariat about releasing of the wages but till date not a single penny was released.
The basic work of the horticulture department is running through these casual labours from the last many years due to shortage of permanent staff, but still we are struggling for regularization,” a protesting labour said.
The protesters appealed to the concerned department and Governor Administration to release the wages and regularize them and threatened that if the wages are not released immediately, they will be forced to come on roads. Their only slogan is regularization but the government is not capable to plunk them happy.

Here in our Kashmir no one will become a doctor, no one will become a teacher, no one will become a pilot, no one will become an engineer and no one will become a lawyer but all will become a labour at length. So, abandon your dreams from your mind. Why is this happening to us because we have been locked in our quarters and daggers were plunk on our lips on our neck due to day to day Lockdown and due to day to day strikes. Always in every year we are facing these problems. Sometimes due to stone pelting, sometimes due to new elections, sometimes due to wrong ministry, sometimes due to encounters and sometimes due to coronovirus. Yesterday, When I heard from my friend that Kashmir University collected Assignment of our subjects and last date has gone then I was surprised and I get lugubrious that when they issued the notice about collecting assignment on 2G Internet Speed and sometimes no network on phones in Kashmir. Now, I only say they are there fully abstracted, selfish, silly and scoundrel. Who issued notice before no network no internet in Kashmir. Think and reflect it is the time nowadays in Kashmir where Internet is working on 0 Speed. On the other hand, Newspaper where we take it, where we read it and where we peer it. It is the government of absurd Ministers who always make excuses and spread violation in Kashmir by Voting and by Killing. We have locked like animals in our homes our lips are sealed, our hands are locked and our eyes are covered with bandag. Government deprived us from our education from our life from our future and there is no one who speak out against us. The impact of conflict on school education is often overlooked. Education in such times can be a sustainable tool for achieving post conflict peace and providing stability and normalcy to the region. It is also a means of instilling hope and positivity as well as offering opportunity to the youth who are surrounded by violence. One of the major challenges of education in situation of conflict is the discontinuities it creates. These impact students’ academic performance as well as their Psyco–social developments. Breaks in education faced by the children of Kashmir are unpredictable, surrounded by fear, trauma and lack of stimulating activity. There is a high academic cost students pay due to long periods of closure. Even in the context of non-conflict, studies show that there is a decline in achievement scores (particularly in reading and math) on returning to the classroom after a long break. All these factors are severely detrimental for learning and development and is unsettling for students, making it tougher to reorient themselves in regular school routine. Learning is not just a function of information gathering, it is reliant on many factors such as parent’s education, environmental stimulation, nutrition and peers amongst others. Children are not empty containers that can be filled with information; they are inquisitive, meaning-making individuals who learn through the process of interacting with their environment rather than ‘remedial classes’.Given the financial constraint, these children are at a disadvantage as they are unable to divert resources towards additional learning opportunities. Education needs to be holistic development of the child that goes beyond basic literacy. In an environment of conflict even the goal of basic literacy for all cannot be met. Studies on students’ achievement decline over long summer breaks clearly reveal socio–economic disparity. Students from traditionally disadvantaged sections of society perform much worse compared to students from higher socio – economic strata. Given the financial constraint, these children are at a disadvantage as they are unable to divert resources towards additional learning opportunities. They also do not have human capital support in form of educated parents, siblings or other family members, to assist them in their learning journey. Tuitions is a way of keeping up with peers but for the poor opportunity costs of attending tuitions is prohibitive. Since the socio-political situation of Kashmir valley is extremely volatile, it is imperative that the government devise creative and innovative solutions for ensuring no child is left behind. These solutions, however, would need to be adaptable to the deep uncertainties and constantly changing dynamics in the region. These solutions could include a combination of formal and non-formal methods of teaching; partnering with NGOs to reach local communities; mitigating the risk of long distance travel by assigning teachers from within the localities to conduct classes in their neighborhood; and/or creating satellite schools within walking distance from home. If the children of Kashmir are to have access to continuous education, creativity and flexibility are essential. This requires logistical and financial support, innovative ideas, training of teachers and most importantly, context sensitivity. It is important to reiterate that education matters and its effective use can break the legacy of violence and mistrust. Discontinuities in education are inimical to psycho–social, emotional and cognitive development and literacy of the child. As we struggle to meet the millennium development goals in education, the impact of conflict on education and learning should be of urgent concern. We need to find ways to give our children a safe and secure learning environment in every situation especially during times of conflict.
