The CBI has been successful in the murder of social activist Narendra Dabholkar. The investigating agency claimed to have recovered a pistol from a low-sea area (Gulf) in Thane district of Maharashtra. The pistol has been sent for forensic examination. However, it is not yet confirmed that it is the same pistol from which Dabholkar was killed. Dabholkar was shot and killed on August 20, 2013 in Pune.
According to sources, the CBI enlisted the help of a foreign agency to find the pistol used in Dabholkar's murder. The investigating agency had claimed in a Pune court that one of the accused shooters, Sharad Kalaskar, broke the pistol used in the murder and was thrown into the sea in Thane on July 23, 2018.
The CBI had claimed before the Pune court that lawyer Sanjeev Punalkar had advised Kalskar to destroy the weapons used in the killings of several people, including journalist Gauri Lankesh. Punalkar is also one of the accused in the case who was arrested and is currently out on bail.
Last year, the CBI informed a Pune court that it had received all the clearance to search the sea for a weapon used to kill Dabholkar. The CBI had also mentioned before the court that the water level is still high due to rain and they will start the search as soon as the water level decreases. Narendra Achutha Dabholkar was a doctor by profession and also worked to awaken the society against superstition.
