The Phoenix police officer who pointed to a family's gun and threatened to fire after their 4-year-old daughter picked up a baby doll from a family dollar store. Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams revealed at a news conference on Tuesday that she wanted to fire Officer Christopher Meyer following a recommendation from the review board that he be suspended without pay for no more than six weeks. "In this situation, a 240-hour suspension is clearly not enough to undo the adverse effects of his conduct on our agency and our nation," the Associated Press reported.
A video of the incident went viral over the summer, adding intense scrutiny to the Phoenix police force, a town of 1.6 million that last year led the country in killings involving cops. Dravon Ames and his fiancee, Iesha Harper, said they went out with their two children, London, 1 and Island, 4, on a family outing late May. Island took a doll from a Family Dollar Store without the knowledge of the couple, according to a claim notice dated June 12 filed by former Arizona attorney general Thomas Horne, who represents Ames and Harper.
The couple's vehicle was pursued by a police patrol group. When family members reached the apartment complex of their babysitter, a cop with his weapon drawn confronted their car and yanked the front door open, the statement said.
