'JEE' and 'NEET' exam-controversy, Government should listen to students
Updated: Aug 28, 2020 07:54 IST | Prabhat Pandey
Corona virus has wreaked havoc in India at this time. As a result, schools, colleges and educational institutions are closed. But meanwhile, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) - Joint Entrance Examination 2020 (JEE) is scheduled to be held. NEET exam is for admission in medical colleges, which is scheduled on 13 September. The JEE Main Examination for admission to Engineering College is scheduled from September 1 to 6 and the JEE Advanced Exam on September 27. Students are demanding to postpone it.
Their question is how they will reach the examination center in the midst of the corona virus. There is also a flood situation in some areas and the students there say that it is difficult to sit for the exam amidst floods and power cuts. Some students are also at risk of flooding as well as corona virus. That's why thousands of students held a day-long hunger strike last Sunday and ran a variety of hash tags to postpone the exam on social media. The students also put photos of the current situation to bring their words to the ears of the government.
The furore over the exams of JEE and Neet has two sides and both are strong. The central government wants these exams to be held in September so that the students can save a year, but the students are saying that these exams should be postponed till after Diwali so that the possible threat to their lives can be averted by the aversion of the corona. . Opposition political parties of the country are also raising their voice in this regard and saying that the opinion of the students should be given importance while the Secretary of Higher Education Shri Amit Khare says that if the examinations are still postponed, it will only harm the students. And their academic life will be affected because earlier these examinations were to be held in the month of April which were postponed till July.
According to Mr. Khare, in view of this, the examinations will be held in the first week of December, which means that the results will come in the new year 2021 and the entire one year of the students will be wasted. New admissions will be in 2021 and new classes can be started only.
On the other hand, a strong argument is being made against this argument as well. Students are saying that due to the spread of corona infection right now, if the examinations are held in the month of September, then there will be a risk of infection and if a student gets corona infected after taking the exams, then the lives of hundreds of other students are also threatened. Will be done. A total of 25 lakh students will sit for the JEE and NEET examinations.
For such a large number of examinees, it would be a very sinful task to take care of the corona infection, which the government will not be able to do. Along with this, floods are going on in states like Assam and Bihar. How will the arrangements for the students of these states sit for the examinations? This arrangement will have to be done in such a way that the risk of spreading the infection from one student to another will be eradicated but the most difficult task will be how the students will reach the examination sites and the system to be free from corona from their stay to other activities after reaching there. How will it be done?
We are not negative or pessimistic, nor are we dismissing the imperative of examinations, but describing what we have seen and experienced as neutral and national. We have also been the best students of the university in our times. Of course NEET and JEE exams can be postponed for some time. There will be less loss and life will not be in trouble. The new academic session can be started from January instead of December. The Corona epidemic has caused innumerable uncertainties. Millions of jobs have been lost and millions are feared. All kinds of chain are broken and are forced to make compromises.
Is this not a state of national loss and crisis? Why is there such official behavior on these competitive examinations that they will be held in September itself? The Supreme Court also did not obligate the Central Government. Only 11 petitions were dismissed. Under the Disaster Management Act, the central government has the prerogative to postpone the examinations. Government should understand practical problems.
