According to a new study, potentially dangerous levels of lead were found in household dust in Sydney’s inland west and in the CBD. Scientists at Macquarie University have analyzed dust absorbed by vacuum cleaners in 224 homes in Sydney for the presence of various toxins, which yielded some alarming results. Researchers estimate that one of five children aged one to two years may have elevated levels of lead accumulated by swallowing and inhaling harming dust. Lead poisoning can permanently disable children, reduce IQ and cause other illnesses.
Among the reasons leading to higher concentrations of lead in dust in the suburbs within 10 km of the city are the presence of old houses with peeling or degraded lead paint, recent renovations, traffic pollution, and the legacy of decades of industry.
Measures that families can take to reduce the effects of toxins in their home include a “no shoes” policy, regularly dusting with a damp cloth, washing hands and faces regularly, using a wet mop instead of dry cleaning, and using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.
